What data should go on a dashboard?
The options really are endless – there is so much data in todays world that there is plenty to choose from! An initial way many people use PowerBI is to show off a particular analysis, evaluation, study or report. It may be that it can also automate your routine reporting and increase team efficiency. Alternatively, you might want new ways to generate next level PowerPoint/Power BI presentations that let you tackle questions about your data live and always stay up to date with the latest information.
It is said that ‘what matters is measured and what is measured matters’. The key is about us understanding what makes your organisation tick and what you need to acheive through using business intelligence tools. What about data security?
If we are working with Power BI, data can be kept within your Microsoft tenant and using row-level security, we can develop information systems that are personalised for your team ensuring that only the right users get access to the data that is relevant to them.
If we are developing custom dashboards in Python then we can either offer a hosted option or work with your systems, teams and servers to host the final solution depending on your needs and available technologies. In any case, we look to ensure that your data remains secure and complies with relevant data protection pracitces and legislation such as GDPR.

What about software licensing costs?
Power BI offers a range of licensing options for your users. Most SME and non-profit use cases will involve users being on a Power BI Pro license (this is included in Microsoft 365 E5) although those with more complex needs may need Premium-Per-User or Premium Tenant licensing. We are happy to advise on the appropriate licensing structure for your users.
In some circumstances, we can develop dashboards using alternative tools such as Python in which case, the licenses for any scripts are included in the support & maintainence package. However, in this instance, there may be additional costs associated to hosting the final solution and we can support a range of options in this scenario (e.g. offering a hosting option or working with your in-house team to host the solution on your on-premises/cloud servers). The level of security required and the intended audience shape the most appropriate option for your use case.
Where additional software licenses will be needed as part of a solution for users or to support the on-going functioning of tools developed, we are happy to advise on any cost-implications.
What other costs are involved?
We develop custom solutions that are tailored to your needs and so there is no one size fits all cost for a project. Depending on the range of tools and software we employ, this may cater for a variety of budgets and scales of operation depending on what you want to achieve. With modern BI tools, many of the things you may be looking to achieve can be developed and maintained for less than you might think. We also think about the on-going costs associated to a system in planning to ensure we offer a high-value package.
